Wood or Eco Fuel? How to Light and Fuel Your Firepit

Every firepit can be ordered as wood burning or set up for our Eco Firepit Fuel. Here’s how each works, so you can get the most out of yours.

Wood burning

If you’ve chosen a wood burning firepit, use well-seasoned (properly dried) logs for the best burn. Seasoned wood lights more easily, burns hotter, and produces less smoke than green or damp wood.

Eco Firepit Fuel

Our Eco Firepit Fuel is made from 100% vegetable wax. It’s near-instant to light, produces around 90% less CO2 than an equivalent wood fire, and is virtually smoke-free and odourless — ideal if you’d rather not send clouds of wood smoke over the fence to your neighbours.

Each full refill contains the equivalent heat output of around 60 logs and burns for:

8 hours — refills for new firepits fitted with the Eco Firepit Kit
4 hours — specially made retrofit refills, for firepits converted with our retrofit kit

A few things worth knowing:

The refills only work inside the Eco Firepit Kit fitment — they can’t be burned on their own.
It takes around 20–30 minutes for the fuel to fully light and reach a large bonfire-style flame.
Because of the size of flame it produces, Eco Firepit Fuel isn’t recommended for our largest 1200mm firepits.
If you’re burning on grass or wooden decking, always put a heat-resistant tile or stone slab underneath to protect the surface.

How to light it

Place the fuel candle into the specially designed holder.
Light the cardboard wick.
If relighting a partially-used refill, remove any loose bits of burnt wick first.

If it isn’t lighting properly: if there’s no full flame after about 10 minutes, screw up a small piece of newspaper or kitchen towel (about the size of a golf ball) and carefully tuck it into the melted wax between the side of the drum and the wick. This is usually only needed on the very first burn.
